If you’re starting off you don’t need a thick textbook. A lot of people on om recommend the Ansel Adams books.

They’re great books, but I don’t think they are appropriate for beginners. They’re thick, they’re dense, and they’re. Processes such as ‘dodging’ and ‘burning’, familiar to many digital users, are just a couple of the Photoshop tools that originated as darkroom techniques.

The key difference is that in your darkroom you are using your hands or pieces of card to dodge and burn (hold back light from or give extra light to selected areas of your print which allows you to emphasize key elements of the picture).

Many manufacturers offer darkroom paper, but the brand I recommend you buy first is Ilford Multigrade RC (resin-coated) paper, with either a glossy or pearl surface.

The hardware for printing is easy to acquire. Second-hand darkroom gear is ridiculously cheap and sometimes even available for : Amateur Photographer.
